Best Shot from February

Time to weed through the month's photos and choose a favorite for the Click it up a Notch challenge.

Not much weeding to do though, since, just today, Nico volunteered to pose for me a few hours before sunset and we went out to have a session.  I didn't get a lot of shots before another duty called, but, in those few moments of looking through the lens and seeing him standing so tall in his hoodie I realized what a young man he's becoming.

He's no little boy anymore.  Sure, I've known for a while that he's threatening to pass me up in height any day now (not saying much).  I know when he hugs me and tells me I'm 'the best mommy ever' but then runs off to make his own iced tea or read Bleak House, that my days of hearing such notions are numbered.  And even though he still asks for permission to check out the Lego web-site, the day he can out manage me on the intricacies of file-downloading and network-maneuvering is imminent.

None of this is news, but, when I looked through that lens today, I was able to stop and see the lean, tall young man with the gentle smile and thoughtful eyes, and I almost couldn't imagine that he was the same little bubbie with the chubby cheeks and all the questions.  Oh my, how he's grown.

That's why I love photography and that's why this is my February favorite:

I also posted this photo for critique with Mom Tried It's Blog Hop.  Have mercy... LOL

  3. First of all, thank you so much for joining in. So glad to have you at Photo Feedback. :)
What a lovely shot. I absolutely love the story behind this photo, too. I think you did a great job with the composition and the depth of field is perfect. The critique I would like to offer is to clone out the light post in the background. Since is it so close to his face, it is distracting. But great shot. It is very natural and I am sure captures his essence (I don't know him, but I can get a sense of his style from this photo). Very well done. :)

    1. Kim, Thank you for hosting the Photo Feedback. It's exactly what I've been hoping for.... starting with these very first critiques.
I wondered about that lamppost, so I'm glad to hear what you thought of it. I'll give that a try to see the difference.
Thanks again... looking forward to more.

  4. Glad to see a fellow Photo Feedback -photographer!! A really lovely portrait, and it was nice to read the story behind it. I know exactly what you mean. My son is only 8, but I am experiencing the same feelings - he's not a baby anymore, he's a big boy and goes to school...
Well anyway about the photo :-) The composition is great. You follow the perfect 'rule of thirds' by placing him on the left and leaving a nice space on the right, for the lovely depth of field. What I would suggest is regarding editing - you might want to try how the photo looks if you add a little more saturation to the colors? (It might also make his eyes more visible behind the glasses?). This might be just my taste, but I like images that are well-saturated and the colors really pop out. Maybe run an action on the image?
Your son is a natural poser :-)
See you next Monday at Photo Feedback!

    1. Thank you very much, Ansku. Thanks for the comments on the writing as well as the photo.
I'll also give adding saturation a try. I typically bump the vibrance and leave the saturation alone, but maybe you're right, esp. with his eyes behind glasses... they're definitely a challenge for me.
And yes, you're right... his posing is not a challenge. Lots of training. LOL
      Looking forward to next week.

  5. Wonderful portrait, I think maybe playing around with color/saturation would brighten the shot up. My son is only 4, they grow up way to fast!

  6. I think this is a great shot. I like his casual stance and expression. It's a lovely portrait. Well done! I agree that the lamp post is a slight distraction and would be pretty easy to remove. I'd also like to see more his hands I think maybe by pulling back just a bit. Overall I think it's a beautiful pic and you did a great job capturing him!!

    1. Thanks from a fellow homeschooler. :-)
I hadn't considered his hands since they're in his pockets, but, yes, I did chop them a bit. Thanks for pointing that out.
      I'm loving this!!
